Wellness has become a buzzword and ‘wellness-secondary travel’ category is on the rise. This segment is defined as “travelers who are visiting a destination for a purpose other than wellness but they still want to remain healthy while going about their business”. These customers take ‘health is wealth’ phrase seriously and are willing to pay a premium for quality sleep.

Herbal tea defined as ‘anything and everything derived from plants, their flowers as well as fungi (not just herbs) that have nutritionally beneficial properties’  is suggested as an ‘in-room wellness amenity’ for this segment not only because of its cost effectiveness and minimal labor inputs but also its ability to become a source of wellness-oriented point of differentiation.

Apart from being a cost effective and scalable option, in-Room Herbal Tea service provides four value additions to hotels; (1) the impact on the guest’s perception of the hotel experience driving word of mouth, social media engagement, return visits, more demand and higher rates; (2) Brand differentiation for heightened customer awareness from earned media;  (3) opportunity for wellness-driven brand storytelling driving awareness and boosting  revenues for this  room category and above all  (4) actual health benefits of herbal tea experienced  by the customer.

The author goes on to specify his choice of eight tea blends namely; Chamomile, Lavender, Anise Seed, Rosemary, Rooibos, Dried Hawthorn Berries, Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat and Strawberry Leaf.
